Question & Answer

1. Can a woman serve a male guest?
Ans: According to the book The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam by Dr. Yusuf Al-Qardawi (Islamic Publications, Lahore, Pakistan), a woman may serve her husband's guest(s) in his presence as long as she adheres to Islamic dress and etiquette. Al-Bukhari, Muslim and others have reported Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Ansari as saying Abu Usayd al-Sa'adi invited the prophet (pbuh) and his companions. Abu al-Sa'adi's wife, Umm Usayd soaked some dates in milk overnight. When the prophet (pbuh) finished his meal, She mashed the dates and brought the drink to him. From this Hadith we can conclude that a woman is permitted to serve her husband and his male visitors.
2. Can children play with dolls and toys of human and animal form?
Ans: In his book, The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam (Islamic Publications, Lahore, Pakistan), Dr. Yusuf Al-Qardawi quotes a Hadith from the prophet's wife Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) as saying:

"I used to play with dolls in the house of the messenger of Allah (pbuh) and my friends would come over to play with me. They would hide when they saw the messenger of Allah (pbuh) approaching, but he was in fact very happy to see them with me and so we played together."

This Hadith is proof of acceptability of children playing with life-like three-dimensional figures.
